The jailer Adriano is forced to enter a block with rebel prisoners to free Binho, the son of a faction leader, who is at risk of life.

When a secret informant tells Adriano of an ongoing escape plan devised by The Engineer and his men, the jailer starts to frantically look for the supposed tunnel. Paranoid with the possibility of a massive escape, Adriano puts his professional reputation and his family life at stake when going to extraordinary measures to unveil the plot. After overstepping his boundaries in his quest, Adriano is suspended by the penitentiary's director, Dr. Vilma. After a prisoner is murdered, Adriano learns the escape was merely a hoax created by The Engineer himself to try and find out who was the jailer's informant.

Believing in the regeneration of inmates, Adriano encourages one of the men, Baiano, to pursue a career in boxing. When an opportunity arises for him to dispute a spot in the Pan-American games, Adriano makes sure he fights for his chance. However, the opponent's manager comes up with a shady offer for Baiano to give up the fight. Tempted by the possibility to make easy money and flee, the inmate runs away before the fight. When learning his girlfriend is pregnant, however, he chooses to do right and returns to win the fight. Crestfallen with his return to the penitentiary, Baiano gains new hope when he realizes he's become an inspiration for other inmates looking for a second chance.
