"He was shot and died on the way to hospital." These words are spoken by Brigadier Davidson about millionaire secret agent Peregrine Smith in "Return of Evil". Listening dumb-struck is ex-Yard Detective Richard Hurst, who learns that Smith was shot on the platform of Warren Street tube station in London. Earlier, Smith's car, mysteriously, would not start. However, all is not as it seems. Smith's apparent assassination has been contrived by The Rat Catchers to mislead the bad guys into thinking he is dead.
