Naito manages to annoy Hanamichi into fouls. He then goes after Rukawa, but Rukawa immediately exposes Naito's weakness, helping Shohoku turn the tide.

Shohoku wins their first game, but Hanamichi is upset about fouling out. He fouls out of the next game too, prompting him to ask Akagi for advice.

Kainan puts third-year student Miyamasu into the game. Hanamichi is thrown off by Miyamasu's sickly demeanor and gets taken out of the game.

Shohoku is behind by 15, but Rukawa makes two shots to put them back on track. Akagi is injured, and a spirited Hanamichi gets back in the game.

Hanamichi tries to make up for Akagi's absence. His and Rukawa's efforts bring Shohoku to within five of Kainan with 1:30 to go in the first half.
