Kim Woo-Jin is a stage drama writer while Korea is under Japanese occupation. He is already married, but he falls in love with Yun Sim-Deok. Yun Sim-Deok is the first Korean soprano. Kim Woo-Jin and Yun Sim-Deok's fate ends tragically.

Shim Deok and Woo Jin grow closer and their feelings for one another become almost too much to hide. Woo Jin introduces the group, including Shim Deok, to his wife. Shim Deok and Woo Jin decide to part ways.

5 years later: Woo Jin is running his family business while Shim Deok is performing on a large stage for the first time. Remembering the promise he made her years ago, Woo Jin shows up at her performance and the two are brought back together again. They decide that they cannot hide their feelings any longer and that they will allow themselves to feel lingering emotions for one another and decide they can begin writing.

The growing pressure from their families and the situation around them becomes too much. Shim Deok and Woo Jin decide that they cannot be happy without each other. Woo Jin's father and wife find out about Shim Deok.
