While Mary Jane recuperates, the Van Lews help fugitive Robert Ford escape north, nearly discovered by Laurette during his departure. Elizabeth considers this their final Underground Railroad mission.

Mourning Tadpole, the Van Lews ensure his death has meaning. Following the funeral, Mary Jane shares with Elizabeth and Eliza her plan for revenge against the Confederacy.

Mary Jane reaches the Gray House and receives a warning about Lavinia. Confederate General Winder sends Union officers Captain Lounsbury and Major Revere, captured at Bull Run, to the P.O.W. facility as Erasmus Ross watches.

In 1862, after the Ball's Bluff defeat, the Van Lews worry about gaining General McClellan's trust. At a Confederate fundraiser, Mary Jane tells Eliza and Elizabeth about additional messages hidden in her donated clothing.

Stokely and Lumpkin capture enemies, taking hostages and beating or killing some. Clara faces beating for a confession when the Van Lews and President Davis arrive, stopping Stokely and freeing the hostages.

Mary Jane searches Davis' office to separate genuine intelligence from false information. Almost discovered, she quickly writes notes for Jericho to take to their group.

Traumatized and numb, Elizabeth leaves the conflict zone. Stokely stops her for questioning, but she finds support in Hampton.
