A newspaperman named Jefferson Drum walks into a mining camp carrying his young son. The men at the camp live in fear of Doc Jubilee, a gunfighter dying of consumption. An old newspaperman is shot for trying to publish an article critical of Jubilee. Drum decides to take over the paper but must also contend with his father-in-law, a senator who wants to take his grandson from Drum. A sudden gold strike deprives Jubilee of his hold over the men and Drum decides to stay on with his son and run the newspaper in what is about to become a boom town.
