The series sees Paul Pennyfeather as an inoffensive divinity student at Oxford University in the 1920s, who is wrongly dismissed for indecent exposure having been made the victim of a prank by The Bollinger Club.

Paul's plans to become a priest are shattered when he is expelled from university after falling victim to a prank. Forced to take up a teaching post at a dismal school he is attracted to the mother of one of his pupils.

The upper-crust world inhabited by wealthy widow Margot Beste-Chetwynde is not one in which Paul feels comfortable, but he decides he will have to try and fit in if he wants to win her heart.

Paul chooses to take the fall for the murky misdeeds of his fiancée Margot, putting himself in deep trouble with the law. Will Paul be able to escape imprisonment, and if he doesn't will Margot wait for him?
