The story of Maggie Beare, an elderly woman suffering from dementia (or so she says) and her faithful, long-suffering son Arthur. Despite all of Maggie's manipulative ways, he is her carer, even if they don't always get along.

Arthur despairs of Maggie's increasing eccentricity and memory lapses, but cannot be sure if they are shrewd tactics to keep him at home. He finds himself responding to the urging of family and friends to put Maggie in a home.

Three hours after sending Maggie out for milk, Arthur discovers that she has been faking a broken wrist to get Meals on Wheels for free.

Maggie Alone

When Maggie comes home in a garbage truck, concerned Arthur asks Robert for financial assistance for someone to look after her during the day. Then Maggie gets into a predicament at the police station.

Arthur's Holiday

Desperate for a break from Maggie, Arthur plans a two-week holiday in exciting Wellington, New Zealand with a girlfriend, and keeps it secret from Maggie lest she foil his plans.

Arthur's Night Out

Arthur gets a sitter for Maggie when he wants a night out with his ex-wife Deirdre. Maggie scares the sitter away and she and Arthur quarrel. He still goes out, but so does Maggie, and she ends up at the same place as Arthur and Deirdre.

Maggie in Love

Arthur is planning a birthday dinner for Maggie and is shocked to discover there will be an additional guest: her boyfriend Lionel. The ensuing dinner party is full of surprises.

Maggie Makes a Will

Maggie convinces herself that she's dying and tries to persuade others, including Arthur who is threatening to move out. She is determined to settle her will and final arrangements and summons everyone to her bedside.
