A major publishing company Genbu Shobo has moved ahead with a publish plan of a new Japanese dictionary named "Daitokai". A young sales staff in Genbu Shobo, Mitsuya Majime is poor at expressing himself, and he loves books. A veteran lexicographer Araki finds out that he has a natural facility for the Japanese language, and headhunts him to the Lexicographical Department. So Majime becomes a highly competent lexicographer over time.

Vastness

A veteran lexicographer Araki has been seeking a replacement for himself because he approaches retirement age. One day, Araki goes to see Majime in the Sales Department as soon as he hears that his assistant Nishioka got to know a sales staff Majime what he is.

Encounter

Majime is transferred to the Lexicographical Department and learns the passions for a new dictionary compiling Araki and Matsumoto have. He is anxious whether he can meet their expectations, but his landlady Take gives some good advices to him. And then he and a beautiful woman have a wonderful encounter on one of these nights.

Love

Majime falls in love with Take's granddaughter Kaguya at first sight. His colleagues support his love. Majime and Nishioka come to have mutual respect for each of their strengths, and they begin to show good spirits of teamwork in their works. However at that time, Nishioka hears a bad news.

Steady Progress

The Lexicographical Department carried out a bold measure Nishioka suggested, the work made slow and steady progress. After a few months, Majime took a holiday for a first time in a long time. He goes out with Kaguya, but he cannot tell his love to her. So he writes a love letter at that night.

Waver

The brass informs only Nishioka that he will transfer to the PR Department, it gives him quite a shock. Meanwhile, Majime hands a love letter to Kaguya as he wavers in his mind.

Majime and Nishioka find a big problem on manuscripts what the Lexicographical Department outsourced. Somehow Nishioka brings to negotiate with outsourcee to an amicable settlement, Majime realizes again that he is enough to trust.

Compile

13 years has passed. A new-face Kishibe was transferred to the Lexicographical Department from the Editorial Department of a fashion magazine. The chief lexicographer Majime appreciates her facility to compile, but she has mixed feelings because she wanted to engage in the production of fashion magazine. So the chief of the PR Department Nishioka asks her a question.

Blood

Kishibe begins afresh to give her mind to the dictionary production. And the paper manufacturing has also taken many years of blood, sweat and tears to develop a few kinds of papers the dictionary's exclusive use.

Pride

Majime decides to redo all checks of 240 thousand words with their pride at stake when Kishibe found that a word is left out. Soon after that, Matsumoto succumbs to an illness unfortunately.

Torch

Matsumoto is convalescing at his home, Majime and Araki visits him to show some advance sheets of "Daitokai". After Matsumoto is very pleased to see that for a while, he confesses his condition in all honesty to Majime and Araki because he wants to pass the torch.
