After Mum has being taken into hospital,and Dad far away, the young Gathercoles are left parent less. Jess realizes that this could result in the family being split up, so taking the role as matriarch, she and the family resolve to stay together. Comedy and farce are ensured as Jess struggles (and succeeds) in keeping the secret from the authorities.
